Changes in The Job Market

Tobi Oluwole: The world has changed. In the past, people stayed with one company for 40 years.

You go to school, get a good job, stay there till you retire at 65. But the world changed in the past year and a half because people’s priorities changed. People saw that, hey, life is short.

And now people are realizing, “if I don’t make a move and do what I love on a day to day basis then I’m wasting my life”. And so the reprioritization.

August 2021 alone, 4.3 million people quit their jobs.

They’re calling it “the great resignation”. And it’s important to understand that this is the best time in history to do something different from what everybody else is doing.

This is the best time in history to start a side hustle or to look for a new job to work remotely because remote work has changed the world.

You can work from France, Spain or Australia. People are understanding that they don’t actually need to be in an office and commute for an hour or an hour and a half to work.

We were not built as human beings to work till we’re dead. It’s not actually how we were built. That was not the intention that God had for us.

You’re built to live your fullest life, to love people, and to see the world that God created.

So I think what’s really changed is people are seeing that they don’t need to suffer until they’re 65 and then retire.

What a Great Total Compensation Looks Like

Tobi Oluwole: I think we need to change the formula that we use to calculate earnings.Previously, it was just total compensation and benefits, bonus, things like that.

But again, the priorities have changed. So the new calculation must be total compensation + flexibility + happiness.

You can be earning six figures but how much flexibility do you have? If you have kids, do you have the ability to go pick up your kids after school?

Do you have the ability to travel and vacation once a year? Do you have the ability to work remotely? And then the last one is happiness. Are you getting fulfilment from this work? Do you feel challenged? Do you feel like you’re making an impact on this job? But also, do you enjoy your leadership team? Do you feel like people believe in you? Do you feel safe enough to take vacation? All those things play into happiness.

So that’s pretty much what I would say is the total compensation.

How to Position Yourself to Land a Great Job in 2022

Tobi Oluwole: I think it’s important to understand where we are in history. In the past, if you wanted to start a business, you needed a big bank loan. You needed a building. If you wanted to make any sort of money outside of a job, you needed this huge capital investment.

Today, with zero dollars, you can start to use your knowledge and expertise to generate money online. So one of the first things I tell people about today is you don’t need to wait for anyone to give you experience. If nobody hires you, just hire yourself because there’s no point in waiting for somebody to see your value when this is the kind of world where your value can be amplified by social media from the comfort of your own house.

The second thing is, whatever you do, do it consistently. And when you’re tired, just continue to do it because consistency builds credibility. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing yet, it’s OK, just continue showing up. Eventually, someone will see you as an expert and say, let me pay you for the expertise that you have shown. You don’t find opportunities because you demand them, you actually find opportunities because you output a supply of your talent.

It’s very important that you consistently show up.

I’ve been posting on LinkedIn for the past 400 days. And there are days where I’m like, “I don’t even have anything to say right now”, honestly. But I still find something valuable to post because consistency builds credibility.

A lot of people are looking for a home run, they want to score the goal from halfway but just do the simple things consistently. Eventually, you will be seen as an expert and people will pay you for your value.

You don’t get to determine the timing of your success, but you do get to determine how prepared you are if success comes.

Give value and show up consistently

Tobi Oluwole:

Show up and keep showing up. Be consistent. Don’t compare yourself to anybody. Yes, people are doing better than you. Yes, people are doing worse than you. You just run your own story and your journey. Nobody can replicate your story. You just show up consistently and eventually you will get to the destination.
